a good day.....

They say you shouldn't live in the past-----
well, sometimes the past brings back lovely memories of great times and 'once-in-a-lifetime' experiences, that, in my confined dotage---i.e. (Confined To My Home In My Old Age, that is) makes life with endless Kleenex filled mucous, truly bearable. (I wish Mucous was useful in some way---like for caulking the tub, or building a wall or something....oh well.....it isn't!)
And I am so very grateful to be surrounded by a lot of my past, all of which gives me joy---the the painting of 'The Cows' by Phyliss Manley, that hangs in my bedroom.  Those ladies are comforting and remind me of some lovely times.

So, today was a wonderful day for re-living lovely past memories.
Here's why.
I discovered a new-to-me channel called GET TV......
They are showing the old CBS Judy Garland TV Series----which was a true gem!

Having seen Ms. Garland "live" many times, back in the day, it was just thrilling to see her on television, once again----On Time Warner Cable here in L.A., GET TV is channel 1283! (Who would have ever thought we would be counting into the thousands on our TV Sets...and back when the Judy Garland show first came on the air---no one ever thought we could or would see her every week singing gloriously in our living rooms.....talk about special memories)

Anyway.....it was just Wonderful! Great songs sung by the greatest performer I've ever seen, 'live' in the Palace Theatre and in other Venues, too, including The Hollywood Bowl.
Amazingly, just yesterday----Sunday-----they showed "A STAR IS BORN" (1954) on Turner Classic Movies....I wrote about Garland and this film a long time ago here on my blog---(which is 10 years old this month)----I wrote about going to see this wonderful film with my dear dear Soul Mate, Sammy, on it's opening day in New York---we sat through two showings---you could do that back then, and I think we would have sat through it a third time if we both didn't have something we had to do that evening....So, seeing Ms. Garland's television show today was a true joy!

Right after that hour GET TV showed a 'special' with Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey---it was just fabulous, too.....these two old pro's reminded me of all of the great great talent that is now long-gone.....

True Broadway and Show Business legends---superb performers of such a high caliber---another terrific hour.....

Then, they showed one of the old Merv Griffin Shows----and two of the guests were Carl Reiner  and Robert Kennedy....!

The time spent with each of the guests was longer than we get now, and it was precious----today, your lucky if a guest on one of the popular daytime and/or night time 'talk' shows gets 5 minutes!!!
Back when we opened on Broadway in "Spoon River", The Today Show gave us a half hour! Can you imagine? A whole half-hour!

I don't know what else GET TV broadcasts, but I think there are more Variety Shows as well as some older films. There are commercials which, I understand, pay the bills, but I cannot watch films that are interrupted by the selling of stuff----Viagra, Reverse Mortgages, Inhalers, etc.....
The Variety shows and the old talk shows----I expect that; but not where films are concerned.....
So.....this was a very good day as far as I'm concerned.
Kleenex and Mucous, be damned!

And you know,
I'm so grateful that I got to live through The Golden Age of Broadway, and the films of the Great Studio days---
It all brings back memories of wonderful times and to be able to see some of it again, though in a different format, well......I'm very grateful for that, too.....

And I'll be watching Judy Garland next Monday night, once again......
I'll let you know if there are other wonderful goodies coming our way when I know about them........

More To Come......

I adore "The Cows" - so peaceful and serene. It's lovely to look at things in our homes and appreciate them, isn't it? I do the same thing. Sometimes it's like looking at things anew again.

And that's so wonderful that you found those programs to watch. I think it's especially fun to watch talk show programs from the past.

So glad to see you posting today!

I love that painting. A feeling of calm came over me just looking.
I haven't heard of that channel but will look for it. Not sure Direct TV offers it but I am so happy it is available to you. To see all those amazing performers again must be wonderful.
I miss the Merv Griffin shows. That was talk as it should be.
Looking forward to "more".

There is nothing wrong with enjoying one's memories of the past. And I don't just say this because I do so myself. :)

We "oldies" are the lucky ones, I believe. We've witness and enjoyed pure talent...talent that didn't need all the bells and whistles to disguise it.

And Garland was a unique talent, that is for sure. She was brilliant. A one-off! That would be a terrific show to see. I envy you. If it is ever available here, I most definitely will be watching it. Lucky you for having the good fortune of seeing Judy Garland live in concert.

I love "A Star Is Born"...all three versions...each of which I've watched many times over...and I still howl my eyes out...every time!!!!

Good to "see" you, Naomi...take good care. Hugs. :)

Naomi, you crack me up! :-) Mucous for caulking. *giggle* We have a t.v. station like that back in Maryland where I used to live. I never took the time to watch it, because I thought it just showed westerns and Mr. Ed. I'll have to look and see if they have something like that here in NY. I remember watching Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. I always thought they looked so much alike. You're right, they took more time to interview people back then. I guess because it didn't cost so much to put on a show that they didn't have to go to a commercial break as often. Oh well. Glad to see a post from you again, and Happy 10th Blogiversary!

Yes, the cows are so pastoral. The ones in my photo chased us though!

I don't have cable or dish but sometimes we get some old channels, not the one you are talking about but similar. Most network stations seem to have a channel that showss old reruns and/or movies. I've been liking one on CBS called Decades and have caught some good stuff. I've also been reading memoirs by musicians of my day (Neil Young and Willie Nelson to start with) and feel similar about the '60s as you do about the Golden age. I only saw the Star is Born with Barbara Streisand.

You crack me up (a pun on caulking) on the imaginative uses for mucous!

I had to smile about your idea of caulking the tub with mucous!!
The Cow painting is rather lovely, I'd enjoy it every day if it was hanging on my wall.
Those old TV shows are not familiar to me as I lived in England back then.

Hi Naomi! I was so glad to see this post. I check here often, and when you leave a post, it's just the nicest surprise.
I'm sorry about your health, I know it's a struggle. Know that I'm thinking of you...
What a terrific television station!
Do you have Netflix? It's pretty terrific. I have a flat screen TV, and there's a place for a USB on the back. I purchased a ROKU, and it has loads and loads of commercial-free stations on it. It streams through the WiFi. Oh, I hope I haven't given you a headache!
Anyway, take care!

Well I'm glad you had such a good day, sounds like you've found a TV station that is perfect for you! There is nothing wrong in looking back on good times and lovely memories, I think it's the negative ones we need to avoid.

I love that painting of the cows too.

I think British chat shows give the guests quite long slots, especially the bigger names. Someone like Madonna will have the whole show to herself.

About all I do anymore is remember and write about the past for the most part. For me there are so many special memories back yonder and just not very many at all over the past several years.

I enjoy those old programs also but I don't think we get "GET TV" here on our cable. We do have one channel that airs a lot of the old game shows but it's not the channel your discussing.

Sorry I missed it earlier but glad you had a good day! They are rare among us and we cherish them!!! xoxoxoxox

Sure do agree with the pleasure derived from memories stimulated by possessions. Can also make parting with some items difficult when downsizing which I need to do more of.

Idea of using mucous amusing. I could sure contribute due to allergies, I guess, with lots of tissues. Remember the woman who made the news with her pictures created with clothes dryer lint?

Wish I'd been able to see Broadway shows but had to wait 'til a few made it to road companies, or some of stars appeared with other productions i.e. Juanita Hall? (orig. Bloody Mary) in "South Pacific" at the St. Louis Muni Opera. Movies often didn't have stage stars in the rolls they created on Broadway, but nothing compares to a live stage performance with a live orchestra in the pit!

Love those TV musical series and special shows! So many I didn't get to see when they aired due to other activities, but I'd enjoy viewing them now. I've had a ROKU box for a year but haven't used it. I've chosen to have only Antenna TV since being in the L.A. area gives me access to all the local comml stations, 2 PBS and more stations plus some occasional really good movies -- including musicals -- on the extra stations. Seems to me I've occasionally had some GET shows. Still I'd like to see Garland's shows, Torme's, Nat King Cole's and others.

When talk was starting our Corp. started them at all stations and we began doing our own hour and a half weekday live TV talk show with quintet, vocalists, guest stars when in town. Our host was offered the Cleveland, O. KYW beginning talk program but didn't accept cause he had committed to our Corp. So KYW (before call letters transferred to PA) hired some guy named Mike Douglas!

On a whim I recently downloaded Ethel Waters bio to my mini-iPad Kindle app to read when I traveled. I only knew the name, remembered she had been in the first movie I ever recalled seeing as a young girl -- "Cabin In The Sky" where I became an instant fan of Lena Horne -- but recalled Ms. Water being in that and some other movies years ago. I was totally unprepared to discover what a star she had apparently been in her day -- also, regarded as quite a singer, first black, or negro then, Broadway star. For some, apparently she could be difficult. I wonder what, if anything, you might have known of her talents? I wondered how objective her biographer had been.

Sure do wish I had GET TV! I'd be in love with all those Broadway classics! And the painting is so beautiful -- I know why you love it so much!

As for the mucuos (which I can't spell to save my soul) -- well, I can relate. Today I was getting my teeth cleaned and they gave me that little suction thing to hold which came in very handy. I said "I need one of these at home!" We bronchiectasis girls need all the solutions we can get! Hang in there!

Sometimes on a Saturday lunch time we get vintage American musicals and they are a joy.
How lucky you were to see Judy live - nothing could beat that.
When I was very young and naïve and Judy was going through hell I used to think if only she could come to stay and I could show her how simple life can be. I was VERY young at the time. Our past helps to keep us going and it can never be taken away.

I am just starting to read blogs again – my computer broke down and I had not been on the web for a long time. I checked and GET TV is not listed in the channels we can see in our area – I’ll keep looking. I did not know of Judy Garland until I came to this country – but I guess most people would not know famous singers from France either, apart from Edith Piaf maybe. It is so nice for you to be able to watch these artists that you knew. I know a while back I watched a movie of Fernandel in a French film, a famous comic when I was growing up and it felt so good to see him again.
My mother loved paintings of cows – she said that to watch them was very relaxing – of course she could only watch them in paintings or postcards because they were not often seen in Paris! Just like for you, I guess you don’t see them often on the streets of LA. I enjoyed reading your post. I hope that you feel well, apart from the mucus that is.
